Roy Cullen M.P. Calls on Prime Minister to Reward African Nations who Commit to Good Governance

ETOBICOKE In responding to a request made by the Prime Minister for input from the Liberal Caucus on policy issues, Roy Cullen, M.P. for Etobicoke North, submitted a letter to the Prime Minister on August 30, 2002, outlining his policy recommendations in a number of areas.

Among those is one that is related to the Prime Minister’s Africa initiative, where G-8 countries committed themselves to a new partnership with Africa. In his letter, Roy Cullen calls on the Government of Canada to recognize and reward countries like Ghana for their commitment to good governance. Moreover, he congratulated those African nations, including Ghana, who have already taken steps to limit or eliminate bribery and corruption in their society.

Cullen noted, "With the G-8 Summit in Kananaskis focus on Africa there is no doubt that this emphasis will benefit the nations of that continent. The establishment of good governance practices is key to the future economic development of these countries, and I hope to contribute to that development."

In his letter, Roy Cullen also reminds the Prime Minister of two proposals that have been sent to him over the past year on behalf of the Canada-Ghana Business Council. The first proposal seeks funding for a high-level Trade Mission from Ghana to Canada. The second initiative is the development of a Doing Business in Ghana guide -a publication that would assist Canadian businessmen and women in their business dealings in Ghana. Roy Cullen assisted in the formation of the Canada-Ghana Business Council, and continues to be a strong proponent of their efforts to further development the economic relationship between Ghana and Canada.
