Government of Canada provides over $2.5 million in funding for employment projects in Etobicoke

ETOBICOKE, ONTARIO-The Honourable Roy Cullen, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness and Member of Parliament for Etobicoke North, on behalf of the Honourable Lucienne Robillard, President of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, today announced funding of $2,595,559 for four projects targeted to help 23,525 unemployed individuals in Etobicoke. The organizations that will receive this funding are the YMCA of Greater Toronto, the YWCA of Greater Toronto, Vocational Pathways Inc. and the Canadian Training Institute.

"On behalf of the Government of Canada, I am pleased to announce funding for four projects aimed at helping people in Etobicoke to find and keep work," said Mr. Cullen. "Through these projects, Canadians will receive the information, tools and practical advice they need to help them get back to work."

The Government of Canada is providing financial assistance for these projects through Employment Assistance Services and Youth Skills Link. These programs work towards improving Canadians' employability, social inclusion and skills and learning.

Today's announcement is linked to Canada's Workplace Skills Strategy, aimed at helping Canadians to acquire the skills they need to find and keep meaningful and productive jobs. The Government of Canada recognizes that Canada's future competitiveness depends on a highly skilled work force and on high performance workplaces that focus on skills development. It will work with business, unions, other levels of government, sector councils and workers to ensure that all Canadians have the opportunity to develop their skills and succeed, and employers' needs are met.

Funding for these projects was provided for in the 2005 federal Budget.

These projects have been reviewed to ensure compliance with the Department's administration of its grant and contribution programs, and are subject to review under the Financial Administration Act.
