Government of Canada
provides over $2.5 million in funding for employment projects in
Etobicoke
ETOBICOKE, ONTARIO-The Honourable Roy Cullen, Parliamentary
Secretary to the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness
and Member of Parliament for Etobicoke North, on behalf of the Honourable
Lucienne Robillard, President of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada,
Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of Human Resources
and Skills Development, today announced funding of $2,595,559 for
four projects targeted to help 23,525 unemployed individuals in
Etobicoke. The organizations that will receive this funding are
the YMCA of Greater Toronto, the YWCA of Greater Toronto, Vocational
Pathways Inc. and the Canadian Training Institute.
"On behalf of the Government of Canada, I am
pleased to announce funding for four projects aimed at helping people
in Etobicoke to find and keep work," said Mr. Cullen. "Through
these projects, Canadians will receive the information, tools and
practical advice they need to help them get back to work."
The Government of Canada is providing financial assistance
for these projects through Employment Assistance Services and Youth
Skills Link. These programs work towards improving Canadians' employability,
social inclusion and skills and learning.
Today's announcement is linked to Canada's Workplace
Skills Strategy, aimed at helping Canadians to acquire the skills
they need to find and keep meaningful and productive jobs. The Government
of Canada recognizes that Canada's future competitiveness depends
on a highly skilled work force and on high performance workplaces
that focus on skills development. It will work with business, unions,
other levels of government, sector councils and workers to ensure
that all Canadians have the opportunity to develop their skills
and succeed, and employers' needs are met.
Funding for these projects was provided for in the
2005 federal Budget.
These projects have been reviewed to ensure
compliance with the Department's administration of its grant and
contribution programs, and are subject to review under the Financial
Administration Act.

| YMCA of Greater Toronto |
The YMCA of Greater Toronto will provide:
- a self-serve employment resource centre for 1,800 unemployed
and out-of-school youth.
- individual employment assessments to develop return-to-work
action plans for 825 unemployed and out-of-school youth;
and
- job placement in suitable jobs with suitable employers
for 55 youth.
Participants will also have the opportunity to attend employment
related workshops, create a resume and cover letter with
an employment coordinator and have access to the Internet
and local community resources.

| YWCA Reach |
The YWCA of Greater Toronto will
help over 500 women facing barriers to employment to find meaningful
work. The participants will take part in workshops on topics
such as communication and problem solving, have access to a
resource centre with print resources and computers, and will
be invited to attend a weekly support group to help them stay
motivated and continue to enhance their employability skills.

Vocational Pathways will provide
5,000 unemployed individuals in Etobicoke with individual assessments
and case managements, and 4,050 of them will receive employability
assessments and create a return-to-work action plan to find
and keep full-time work. The participants will also attend workshops
on education, decision-making, goal setting, and personal finance.

| Breaking the Cycle Program |
The Canadian Training Institute
will help 25 youth facing barriers to employment to acquire
and apply social and labour market knowledge, employment skills
and competitiveness needed to facilitate their transition to
the labour market or return to school. |
