LABATT RECOGNIZES HUMBER THROUGH ENDOWMENT
Etobicoke North MP Roy Cullen commitment
to community honoured through one of the two scholarships
TORONTO, May 12, 2005 - Humber Institute of Technology
and Advanced Learning today received an endowment from Labatt Breweries
of Canada that will fund two annual scholarships in perpetuity to
deserving students. The endowment also recognizes Etobicoke North
MP Roy Cullen's service to the Etobicoke community.
The $100,000 endowment will provide one-year tuition
scholarships for one student in each of the following categories:
§ The Honourable Roy Cullen, P.C.-Labatt Breweries of Canada
Community of Etobicoke Scholarship, recognizing commitment to community
service, as well as financial need;
§ The Labatt Breweries of Canada Scholarship in the School
of Hospitality, Recreation and Tourism for a student in this field
of study demonstrating academic excellence and financial need.
"The establishment of these scholarships by Labatt will be
of great benefit to future Humber students, and of even greater
value now that the provincial government has announced funding to
be provided annually to match funds raised by Ontario colleges and
universities for student financial assistance, which could substantially
raise the value of this gift," said Dr. Robert A. Gordon, President,
Humber. "The Honourable Roy Cullen, P.C., M.P. has been a great
friend of, and has worked tirelessly for, Humber and this community.
We're pleased to join Labatt in honouring him today."
"Labatt has a long-standing tradition of supporting
young people, and over the years
has provided opportunities for thousands of Canadian students to
acquire the skills
and experiences that will enable them to become future
leaders," said Charlie Angelakos, Director of Corporate Affairs
(Ontario), Labatt Breweries of Canada. "We are proud to recognize
the commitment to leadership and community involvement that Roy
Cullen exemplifies - values that are honoured and shared by Labatt.
As Canada's leading brewer, it gives us great pride
also to support the continued study in the areas of Hospitality,
Recreation and Tourism. Our hope in establishing this scholarship
is that the best and brightest students entering this important
and exciting field will be able to develop themselves at Humber
without being discouraged because of financial need."
"This very generous contribution by Labatt Breweries
of Canada recognizes the excellent educational programs that Humber
Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning offers to students
in Etobicoke North and across Canada, said The Honourable Roy Cullen,
P.C., M.P. "It is a great honour to be recognized in this way
by two such well-respected organizations".
