Gasoline Report

Ottawa - The Liberal Committee on Gasoline Pricing in Canada released their findings today in Ottawa. After months of cross-country consultations with industry representatives, consumer groups and members of the public, the committee has made public its suggestions to enhance competitiveness in the oil industry and enable independent retailers to stay in the business.

"Our committee has laid out very practical steps that can be taken to ensure that consumers are getting the best possible price at the pumps," local M.P. Roy Cullen, vice-chair of the committee, stated. "Government and the industry itself have a responsibility to see that Canadians have access to affordable gasoline."

The comprehensive report looked at all angles of the gasoline pricing issue: government involvement in the oil industry, the competition act, taxation and the oil industry, environmental issues and the role of the independent retailer.

The report will be studied by the government over the next few months.
