Government of Canada
Investment Promotes Clean Air Technology
September 5, 2001
ETOBICOKE— Canadians could soon fill up their natural gas-powered vehicles
at home, using an appliance not much bigger than a bread box. A Government
of Canada investment in the home refueling appliance was announced today
by Roy Cullen, Member of Parliament for Etobicoke North.
The Government of Canada is providing $2.96 million is repayable to
FuelMaker Corporation to design and test the appliance. Additional
funding in the amount of $1.25 million will be provided by the South Coast
Air Quality Management District, the United States Department of Energy
and the California Air Resources Board. The home refueling appliance
will be compact and easy to operate, with a maintainence-free life of about
five years.
"This project shows how climate change solutions can offer both economic
and environmental success," said Mr. Cullen. "The development and
deployment of this innovative technology should lead to increased use of
clean vehicles with resulting environmental benefits for all of us."
He added that this investment clearly shows the firm commitment of the
Government of Canada to promoting sustainable development and a clean environment.
The project is expected to create a total of 126 jobs and significantly
reduce greenhouse gas and other emissions by encouraging the increased
use of cleaner natural gas-powered vehicles. Funding for this agreement
was provided for in the February 2000 budget and is therefore built into
the existing financial framework.
