Release: Immediate February 2, 2007 Roy Cullen Elected
Vice-Chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Public Safety and National
Security Ottawa - Hon. Roy Cullen,
Member of Parliament for Etobicoke North, was elected Vice-Chair of the House
Of Commons Standing Committee Public Safety and National Security. The election
took place early yesterday with the members of the committee voting unanimously
in favour of Mr. Cullen. "I am grateful to my colleagues
on the Committee who placed their confidence in me to carry out the duties and
responsibility of Vice-Chair," said Cullen. Initially
elected to the House of Commons in a by-election in 1996, Mr. Cullen was re-elected
in the 1997, 2000, 2004 and 2006 General Elections as the Member of Parliament
for Etobicoke North. In February of 2004 Mr. Cullen was elected Chair of the House
of Commons Standing Committee on Finance. On July 20th, 2004, Mr. Cullen was sworn
in as a member of the Privy Council of Canada (P.C.) and appointed Parliamentary
Secretary to the Honourable Anne McLellan, Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister
for Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness. From 2006 until January 17, 2006,
Mr. Cullen was the Natural Resources critic for the Official Opposition. "As
a new member of this committee I hope to bring my experience as the former Parliamentary
Secretary for Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness into the mix and contribute
to the discourse. It is important to hold this Conservative government to account
and I look forward to the opportunity to do so. The House of
Commons Public Safety Committee, which is currently reviewing the Governments
decision to arm border guards, has its regular meetings on Tuesdays and Thursdays. For
