Etobicoke CAP Sites Selected in National Competition.
OTTAWA - Roy Cullen, MP for Etobicoke North, announced today the most recent competition result of the Community Access Program (CAP). Public Internet Access sites will be established at the
following locations: the Albion Boys and Girls Club on Mount Olive Drive, Rowntree Manor at Islington and Finch and at the Albion Centre. Albion Neighbourhood Services was able to secure all
three locations for Etobicoke through the CAP program.
"Our government wants Canada to be the most connected country in the world," said Cullen. "The Community Access Program will make a difference to Etobicoke by ensuring that all members of this
community have convenient access to the Internet" he added.
All three locations will receive two or three computers for public use. In addition, there will be an instructor available at all locations to help people navigate the Internet. Hours of
operation will vary at each location, but access will be available in the afternoon, evenings and on Saturdays.
The successful applications were selected for consideration by CAP's National Advisory Committee. The result is based on peer review, conducted at arm's length by a community-based provincial
review committee. CAP's National Advisory Committee recommended unanimously that all selected sites should receive funding. The selection criteria are: need, organization, infrastructure,
partnerships and future development potential.
Through Industry Canada's CAP, the Government of Canada aims to help establish up to 10,000 access sites in remote, rural and urban settings nation-wide by March 31, 2001. CAP is a key component
of the Connecting Canadians initiative. More specifically, it is designed to provide Canadians with affordable access to the Internet and ultimately help create jobs, growth, and other
opportunities associated with the development of the information highway.
The next deadline for CAP submissions in urban and rural communities is May 31, 2000.
