ROY CULLEN EXPRESSES
SHOCK AT TERRORIST ATTACK ON USA AND STRESSES THAT ANY SINGLE COMMUNITY
MUST NOT BE BLAMED
September 17, 2001
ETOBICOKE – Roy Cullen, Member of Parliament for Etobicoke North, today
expressed his shock and horror at the September 11, 2001 plane hijackings
and terrorist attacks in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania.
“I was meeting with constituents on Tuesday morning when I learned
of these vicious terrorist attacks in the United States. These attacks
are not only an attack on the USA, but on all nations that value
freedom. It is impossible to fully comprehend the evil that would
have conjured up such a cowardly and depraved assault upon thousands of
innocent people,” stated Cullen.
Mr. Cullen went on to say - “All Canadians are praying for the brave
firefighters and rescue workers who died during the rescue efforts and
for those who are working around the clock to recover any survivors.
The government is supporting those Canadians who are directly affected
by these terrible tragedies. Canada stands ready to provide any necessary
assistance that our American friends may need at this very difficult time.”
“Our nation needs to carefully consider a focused and reasoned response
to these terrorist attacks, working with the United States and our other
NATO allies. We are determined to eliminate any possible future terrorist
threats and we are increasing national security measures at airports and
border crossings.”
“It is very important for our community not to single out any one
community or ethnic group to lay blame for these terrorist attacks.
Prime Minister Chrétien has unequivocally cautioned against looking
for scapegoats at home. He has emphasized that we are in a struggle
against terrorism, not any one community or faith.”
“My thoughts and prayers are with those that have been touched by
this tragedy, those who have lost loved ones. Our nations will persevere
and terrorists will be routed out and brought to justice,” said Cullen.
